Is it spelt jipped, or gypped?
I think it is spelt gypped. The reason for which I am unsure.
I’ve been feeling really exhausted as of late, so waking up at 1pm this afternoon was no surprise :p Over the last week, I’ve been pretty flat out with work and other commitments and things I put off until holidays. I’ve managed to get about 3 or 4 major things done from my “Holiday To-Do List”… But there is still a hell of a lot to go. Yesterday was the last day of Term 2, and in following tradition at Girraween High, Year 12 hosted the school’s annual Talent Quest. It brought back memories of this time two years ago when we hosted it. I was lucky enough to pop in and see this year’s talent quest in between doing work upstairs. I didn’t stay for much of it – pretty much only the beginning of it and the very end of it.
It was nothing compared to 2006’s Talent Quest! I don’t only say that out of loyalty to my own year group, but they didn’t have a proper scoreboard projected, and they ran out of acts about half an hour too early so they had to rope in some last minute performances and re-do some of the end ones and pass them off as “encore” repeats. Note here, that there was no All-Year 12 Finale act either! Oh and the one thing that really stood out to me was that the major prize was a large glass jar of M&Ms! Hahaha, two years ago when the “Cool Group” won the talent quest with their 90s Mini Medley, we got a $75 cash prize! Poor little Year 7/8 girl that won it probably didn’t even know she got jipped!
Anywhooo, I should probably go and do something more productive.

Wow that’s lame, though it’s pretty hard to do better than our talent quest 😛 and last year’s wasn’t that great either…

I think it’s “gipped.” I was actually Googling for the correct spelling when I found your blog. I hate words that have ambiguous proper spelling!

It should be Gypped as it is a derogatory term directed at Gypsy’s.

Correct, Gypsy’s had quite the rep for being thieves and scammed. That is where the term came from.

Libby is right. Gypsies were stereotyped as being cheaters and thieves, so to “gyp” someone is to cheat them. It’s literally an ethnic slur.

It’s jipped for broadcasters Joining In Progress a show after a long running sports event for example.

Guess I need to get out more. I’ve never seen “gypped” mis-spelled as “jipped” until I saw it “spelt” that way on an MSNBC Chyron graphic and so looked it up and landed here. Somewhere along the way, out of ignorance, I guess it was mis-spelled that way, and now it actually gains a modicum of currency, which is discouraging, because it’s for the wrong reasons. Another example of how the less educable among us spell words based on phonetics, not based on knowledge, hence, subliteracy rears its ugly head.

go make some linguist friends and ask them what the difference between prescriptivism/descriptivism is. heaven forbid we spell our words phonetically because phonetics is not considered knowledge and it makes you look like such a peasant. /sarcasm but really, have you been reading the replies. so you’d love to keep the spelling as “gypped” so that everyone knows that ethnic slur towards gypsies? you wanna arbitrarily decide what is educated or uneducated because it makes you feel elite?

this is an interesting discussion, especially because the “jipped” or “gypped” however you spell it comes from the word gypsy- basically stereotyping all Romani people as thieves, which itself originates from the misconception that the Romani people came from Egypt… talk about adding insult to injury….

I literally had NO clue of the origins of this word and never thought it was spelled “gypped”. I feel kind of bad but I really had no idea. I don’t think you can blame people for using the word if they are unaware of the origin. I honestly just took it to mean that you bought/paid for something and you didn’t get what you were supposed to. And I in know way associated it with Gypsies… You really do learn something everyday. I don’t say it often and I’ve never had to write it down, but I definitely won’t use it at all anymore.
