Last weekend, an Indian couple walked into Dick Smith Powerhouse and bought a brand new Sony X Series 46″ LCD TV with the whole package attached… they also paid extra for delivery with Powersquad (our affiliated delivery and installation company). The whole package was put on GE Finance over a 24 month Interest Free contract under the wife’s name.
On Saturday, the couple came back (before the delivery was made, so the TV package was still on our dock). They insisted that they wanted to take the TV right now and then…. Okay, fair enough, refund the delivery fee and wheel the package down to their car. Rick took it down into the carpark for them, and was surprised to find that they expected to fit their brand new 46″ LCD Sony Bravia TV in a Toyota Corolla. Good luck fitting that in the boot!!
Anyway, they realised that it wasn’t going to work, so they called for a Maxi Taxi. After sitting in the carpark with their brand new TV exposed to the world for three entire hours, a taxi arrived… But it wasn’t a Maxi Taxi. It was a station wagon. And, the back seats didn’t even collapse down. That was failed attempt number two.
But wait, no… out of nowhere, a considerate couple came over and offered them to drive their TV to their home. They had a larger vehicle and the TV fit in with ease. So the Indian couple got into their Corolla and followed the other couple out of the carpark and onto the busy streets. Hold on… wait! How on earth would this considerate couple know where to drive their TV?! Now comes the sudden shock realisation that they didn’t take a name, nor a number…
And then, yes, the inevitable – they lost sight of the car infront, and their TV… and they didn’t note the number plate. They drove back to the store, and told the staff what happened. I don’t know what they were expecting we could do… It’s out of our hands now.
There are so many things wrong with this true story that I don’t know where to begin… I’m finding it hard to justify the pain I feel for them.
And the icing on the cake, because they signed a contract on GE finance, they’re stuck paying off the $3,500+ over the next two years.
